November 8, 2009 When the Declaration of Independence was signed it not only meant we would be free from England and their government but it also meant that we would be free from all government including our own. It meant that we the people are in charge of our own lives and to live as free as possible. It meant that private companies were going to run our economy not the federal government. It meant we got to decide what to do with our money, not give it up to fund pork barrel projects. It also meant that we had every right to defend ourselves from other individuals or the even tyranny of our own government. The 2nd amendment insures our right to self defense. A right that is natural to us and not allotted to us by government or anyone else. "No Free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." (Thomas Jefferson, Proposal Virginia Constitution, 1 T. Jefferson Papers, 334,[C.J.Boyd, Ed., 1950]) Thomas Jefferson once said. It clearly means that if we loose our right to bear arms that we will eventually loose every right the constitution is intended to protect. The beauty of the 2nd Amendment is that it will not be needed unless it is taken away. It protects every other right that we hold dear to us as free Americans. I know many people in this nation may not even own a gun, and there fore, what difference would it make to them if we were stripped of our 2nd amendment rights? But what they don’t think about is where does it end? What would stop our government from regulating our freedom of speech? Or the right to a fair trial? There is a very good reason the right to bear arms is SECOND on the bill of rights, because our forefathers saw how important it is for a free society to be armed. They knew the consequences of having that right stripped away and they added it to the Bill of Rights to protect us in today’s modern time of false security that our public services will protect us from all of the evils of the world. This leaves the ignorance of the citizens to simply say “I don’t have to worry about that, the government will protect me.” When they forget that they themselves are the government. Every American needs to take responsibility for their own safety and livelihood, knowing full well that they cannot rely on anyone else to save them and if they do there is a very sturdy string attached with little protection. This is why we urge our representatives to either start fighting or keep fighting for every single right in that is protected by the constitution and to work together to abolish “Big Government” and realize that people are responsible and need to be so for our great country to keep thriving. If we keep lazily putting our responsibilities on the government we will no longer have a free thought to our heads. And this includes our right to self defense.
