Why 2A?
Actually no, I don’t think guns are a guy thing. I like to shoot too. I think its fun. Shooting a .22 pistol on a nice summer day, or at an indoor range during the winter, is great fun. I also enjoy shooting my Kimber .38 Super 1911, or my .223 AR15. I don’t know just what the statistics are, but I do know lots of women like to shoot. I think the National Shooting Sports Foundation says that there are millions of women in the United States that own guns and shoot. Does that sound like just a guy thing? In addition, working with the wonderful ladies that make up the Second Amendment Sisters is fun and it is rewarding knowing that together we are promoting something dear to us all, our heritage and American way of life. But fun and recreation is not all what the Second Amendment is about. It’s about my right to protect myself from harm. The Second Amendment Sister’s motto is “Self Defense is a basic human right.” How simple and straightforward is that? Of course we have the right to defend ourselves. It is a God given right that we’ve always had. Our nation’s Founders knew they weren’t granting rights when they wrote the wonderfully worded Bill of Rights, but were affirming rights that already existed. Just because King George of England chose to ignore our rights did not mean they didn’t pre-exist. Besides all that, I’m a woman and not very strong, and yes, I probably hit like a girl. But I have a right to keep and bear arms and by doing so can effectively protect myself from aggression even if it is larger, stronger, or more numerous, if I am properly armed. I remember years ago, my little sister was dating a man with the nickname of Gunner. She was out late, it was after dark, and from an alley two men came at her in a manner that put her in a state of fright. The situation made her so fearful that she could not move, but was frozen in place and couldn’t do anything but call out for her boyfriend. She was so scared that all that came out was Gun-. When they heard her say that the two men turned and fled. They obviously thought that she had a gun. Another incident I remember from years ago was the case of a woman being abducted by a man in a vehicle. The woman was physically assaulted and killed, sadly an all too common an event. What was unusual about this case was that the woman reached into her purse and turned on a tape recorder. Her pleading with her abductor to not kill her was recorded for the entire world to hear and was heart wrenching to say the least. If only this poor woman had had a handgun in her purse instead of a tape recorder. How different the outcome could have been. There are countless cases where evil could had been stopped had the weaker victim been armed. Indeed there are countless cases where evil was stopped because the good guy, or gal, was armed. Those cases don’t get the press coverage they deserve it seems, it’s considered less news worthy for some odd reason. Self defense is a basic human right. We have always had this right and this right will always exist. We must resist and absolutely not allow the passage of laws that are contrary to the Bill of Rights, laws that would infringe on our basic human rights, and laws that are illegal because they are contrary to the Constitution. We must restore the original intent of 2A in parts of the nation that has infringed upon it. Places like Wisconsin and Illinois that do not allow a woman to carry a concealed handgun, for example. What about our elected representatives? Is there be a better standard, a better litmus test, to go by when judging if a person is worthy of political office than by their stance on the 2nd Amendment? Think about it. They take an oath to uphold the Constitution. How good is their word? It’s easy enough to see. Do they look at us as subjects that need to be controlled, or as free Americans that have a right to protect ourselves and loved ones? A politician’s stance on the Second Amendment can give the perfect evidence if their world view is that of Americanism or something other than. In all the world, the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is recognized uniquely in America and has contributed in no small part to America’s greatness. This is part of our heritage that is worth fighting for and preserving for our children. We should look to other parts of the world and cultures where women are treated poorly and know that we do not want that here. Our way of life is worth preserving. The Second Amendment is worthy of focus. I am happy and proud to be a part of the Second Amendment Sisters, an organization dedicated to preserving a woman’s right to self defense. Angela Briggs
