ARM YOURSELF WITH THE FACTS!
Do you think law-abiding citizens will always have a Constitutional right to own guns? You may believe that confiscation could never happen in this country but it did happen in California and it did happen in New York City. There are a lot of anti-gun or just plain misinformed people in this country whose actions are destroying our Constitutional rights. These are people who are unaware of the current laws and how poorly these laws are being enforced, unaware of what strict gun control will do to crime rates and how new laws and stricter gun control will effect our basic human right to protect ourselves and our children. People are obtaining misinformation from the anti-gunners. They believe they know what's best for us and our families based on this information. There are people who believe that gun registration is "just common sense"! These people are making their voices heard by their lawmakers and so should we! Don't let the anti-gunners and the misinformed speak for us!

Following are some excerpts from Gun Facts by Guy Smith:
Myth: Handguns are 43 times more likely to kill a family member than a criminal
FACT: Of the 43 deaths reported in this flawed study, 37 (86%) were suicides. Other deaths involved criminal activity between the family members (drug deals gone bad).* Source-Aurther L. Kellerman, Protection or Peril?: An analysis of Firearm-Related Deaths in the home, 314 New Eng. J. Med. 1557-60 1986. Kellerman admits that his study did "not include cases in which burglars or intruders are wounded or frightened away by the use or display of a firearm." He also admitted his study did not look at situations in which intruders "purposely avoided a home known to be armed." This is a classic case of a "study" conducted to acheive a desired result.
FACT: Of the remaining deaths, the deceased family members include felons, drug dealers, violent spouses committing assault, and other criminal activities. *Source-Ibid.
FACT: Only 0.1% (1 in a thousand) of the defensive uses of guns results in the death of the predator. *Source-Dr. Gary Kleck, "Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America." New York: Aldine de Gruyter. 1991.
Myth : 13 children are killed each day by guns.
FACT: The statistics cited here include "children" up to age 19 or 24, depending on the source. Most violent crime is committed by males ages 16-24, so these numbers include adult gang members dying during criminal activity *Source-FBI Uniform Crime Statistics, 1997. If you include only ages 0-14, the number drops to 1.7/day.
FACT: Criminals are included-70% of these deaths are adults, age 17-20, involved in gang activity at the time of their deaths, often involved in drug related firefights.
FACT: Suicides and criminals included- These numbers include criminal activities and suicides. *Source-National Center for Health Statistics,1997. As suicides make up more than 1/2 of all gun deaths, the number drops even further, to less than one per day.
FACT: Four children die each day in the U.S. from Parental neglect and abuse.*Source-National Center on Child Abuse Prevention, 1998 Annual Survey. [Editor: Perhaps we should register and license parents]
Myth : If it saves the life of one child, it is worth it.
FACT: Firearms in private hands are used 2.5 million times each year to prevent crime, or, 6,849 times every day (*Source-Gary Kleck, Criminologist, Florida State University, 1997. , ), including rapes, aggravated assaults, and kidnapping. The number of innocent children protected by firearm owning far outweighs the number hurt by guns.
