Update - On March 18th, 2008 the Supreme Court head oral arguments for this case. The justices comments indicate that a majority favor the individual rights position, but the degree of regulation they believe permissible was unclear. Their decision will be announced later this spring and promises to be a pivotal moment in the history of our civil rights. A transcript of the oral arguments is here and audio can be found here A few MSM pieces are available here and here.
*Update* - On May 8th, the D.C. District Court decided not to rehear Parker v. D.C. en banc. D.C. can now appeal to the Supreme Court or allow the current ruling to stand.
Earlier this year, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that DC's decades-old handgun ban and restrictive firearms regulations violated the Second Amendment. There is a good chance that this case will make it to the Supreme Court and a definitive ruling on the Second Amendment. The Court's decision is an excellent review of the history of the right to bear arms and can be found at the the following site. http://www.gurapossessky.com/parker_pleadings.htm
